The birth of DuVernay's daughter was on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay began to develop her artistic and creative talents as a child, thanks to Aunt Denise. She was night nurses to afford her mother the space she required during the day for the love of literature, art, and theatre. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the arts can serve to engage people. Her mother was also a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay to express herself through the medium of art. DuVernay, who grew up together with her parents in Compton, spent each summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she earned qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. While she was still in school, DuVernay was interested in creating for broadcast journalism. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to monitor and investigate the residence of an individual juror. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism so she decided to move towards the field of publicity. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant for a film studio that was small shortly after she graduated from the college. In this role, she launched her own public relations company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Besides PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
